Case Study: Flooded Culvert at Spring Creek (HEC-RAS Application Example 3) Problem: The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (MassDCR) is considering the replacement of the Woods Memorial Bridge over the Malden River near Downtown Boston (See Figure 0). Required: You are to model the existing waterway to determine the flow through the bridge. The flow should be similar in magnitude to the flow you calculated in class without the bridge in the cross-section. Directions to Use HEC-RAS: 1. On the Main Screen, click on the “File” Button (Fig. 1). Then, click on “New Project.” 2. PROJECT FILE: In the New Project Screen, navigate to a file folder on your USB or home computer hard drive. Input in the title block: “YourLastName_YourFirstName”. This will automatically create the file name: “YourLastName_YourFirstName.prj.” Click OK. 3. GEOMETRY: Click on the Geometric Data button, (Fig 2) and draw a line using the River Reach Button (Fig 3) from the top to the bottom of the screen. Enter “Malden” for both the River and Reach Name. Click OK. 4. CROSS-SECTION: Click on the Cross Section button (Fig 3). Click on “Options” then “Add a New Cross Section”. Enter “4.0” as the River Station. Enter the data as shown in Figure 4. Click on the “Apply Data Button” (Fig 4) to apply new data. 5. Repeat Step 4 for River Stations 3.0, 2.0 and 1.0 using the data in Figures 5, 6, and 7, respectively.
