-MUST BE 1500 words in length, typed, and submitted to the â€˜Primary Source Assignmentâ€™ on the e-Learn site for this course in Word Document (rich text format) NO LATER than 11:59PM on Sunday, July 19 and is worth 25% of your total grade for this course. Note: Plagiarism in any form will result in an automatic â€˜Fâ€™ for this assignment
-You will choose from the PRIMARY SOURCE options presented below and essentially treat the source or bundle of sources as a â€˜book reportâ€™. Be mindful that a â€˜primary sourceâ€™ is any source that was written during the actual time period you are studying. -Each of the options offered below pertains to one of the four units we cover in HIST2020. Understand that your Major Essay Assignment will also feature options to choose fromâ€”each corresponding to one of the four units we cover during this semester. The Instructor encourages students to choose a primary source option based on the subject area that the student plans to use for their Major Essay Assignment.

*Black Elk Speaks (1932)â€”This is a primary source that will provide a Native American historical perspective of the late 19th century. Students will essentially treat this option as a â€˜book reportâ€™. Students must discuss how Black Elkâ€™s account helps us better understand the opening of the West from the perspective of Native Americans and what Black Elk contributes to our understanding of the conquest of the West
*The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum (1900)â€”Students will treat this option as a â€˜book reportâ€™, but must display how this book contributes to our understanding of the cultural, economic, and political trends and events of the late 19th centuryâ€”including monetary policy, the Populist/Progressive movement, and American politics
*The Talented Tenth, by W.E.B. Dubois (p5-14) and Industrial Education for the Negro, by Booker T. Washington (p15-34) in The Negro Problem, by Washington et al (2007)â€”Students will compare & contrast the visions of Dubois & Washington on empowering Black America at the turn of the 20th century
Unit 2 Option:
*The Road to Serfdom, by Friedrich von Hayek (1945) and The New World Order, by HG Wells (1940)â€”Students will compare & contrast the economic, political, and cultural opinions of Wells and Hayek
Unit 3 Option:
*Winston Churchillâ€™s â€˜Iron Curtainâ€™ speech and President Dwight D. Eisenhowerâ€™s â€˜Farewell Addressâ€™ (1961)â€” Students will analyze both speeches and address the fears and realities of the Cold War
Unit 4 Options:
*Alex Haleyâ€™s 1963 Malcolm X interview for Playboy Magazine and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.â€™s 1964 Nobel Prize Lectureâ€”Students will compare & contrast the visions of Dr. King & Malcolm X in relation to Civil Rights
*Chapter 2 of Betty Friedanâ€™s Feminine Mystique (1963) and Chapter 13 of Angela Davisâ€™ Women, Race and Class (1981)â€”both pieces are on the concept of â€˜houseworkâ€™, and students will compare/contrast their analyses.
