Fall 2018 Final Exam CJS 2060 Police Management
While applying the concepts and procedures of the 7 Step Process for Complex Decision Making (p#142), address the below issue within the police department:
The Chief of Police for a department of 1800 sworn police officers, and 325 supporting staff personnel, has observed an alarming trend of poor physical fitness throughout the department. Additionally, a significant number of police officers had been forced into early retirement due to health ailments and were no longer able to meet the physical demands of the job. Some officers are so overweight that they have difficulty keeping their shirts tucked in. Additionally, in the past year alone two officers had heart attacks on the job with one of the officers dying, and one officer experienced a stroke.
Other than when police officers attend the police academy as recruit officers, the department does not engage a program of physical fitness or maintain departmental standard levels of physical fitness.
The Chief has designated his Research and Development Office to thoroughly examine this shortcoming, comprise a program of physical fitness where officers are required to meet an annual standard, inclusive of various exercise programs, health planning and nutrition education. Additionally, as an incentive, to consider a workout regimen that can be accomplished within an employee’s work day. Possibly researchers may want to review other police department’s physical fitness program and see what manner of incentives they have applied, if any.
Instructions to Students:
while strictly following the formatting requirements as outlined in the syllabus, attempt to resolve the above listed concern on the part of the police chief. I understand you may have to engage literary license and make up some information in order to address all 7 steps (page #142). Use your common sense when doing such. Use your imagination to address this concern. That requires you to consider how you would implement, pay for, train staff, monitor, discipline, institute medical screening, and justify the new program, if indeed it is even feasible to introduce such a program to your police department.
