My Original Post:

According to the given scenario, the main ethical responsibility of the BCBA is to ensure competence and offer services within their professional boundaries is vivid. The ethics code section 4.03, it specifies that behavior analysts should only offer services in areas they are competent in, and if the competency aspect lacks in a specific culture or language, they must find appropriate training or supervision (BACB, 2020). In this case, the ability of Maria to speak both English and Spanish increases her value for the agency but also inflicts a huge burden on her at the same time. This scenario clearly shows the essence of following Standard 4.03 and finding support or additional resources to make sure that competent services are offered to the Spanish-speaking families and RBTs who are being supervised by Maria.

Thank you for sharing your post discussing Maria’s ethical dilemma and suggesting she seeks support and ensures she has the resources, including her time, to maximize the client’s benefits. I agree she is a valuable employee as the RBTs and clients she serves favor a Spanish-speaking BCBA. Maria should discuss her concerns with the agency to avoid burnout and ensure she can offer the best services to clients and supervisees. Maria is ethically obligated to effectively treat her clients (BACB, 2020). She should also ensure enough time to train, provide feedback, and supervise all RBTs (BACB, 2020). Open communication with her agency will hopefully help her balance her caseload and create solutions to help her avoid crossing any ethical guidelines.
