Response one:Eddie Bernice Johnson is a current congresswoman in her fourteenth term for the Congressional District of Texas; she was also a registered nurse with a history in psychiatric nursing (U.S. Representative). This accomplished woman was the first African-American Chief Psychiatric Nurse to work for the V.A. Hospital in Dallas, Texas and later became the first nurse elected to the Texas State House and Texas Senate (U.S. Representative). Eddie Bernice Johnson is the founder of the Congressional Homelessness Caucus and Diversity & Innovation Caucus and has done a great deal for her country (U.S. Representative).

In March of 2019, Eddie Johnson was said to have sponsored the new legislation to decrease health care premiums in Texas and create better protection for those with pre-existing conditions (U.S. Representative). Also in March 2019, Eddie Johnson introduced legislation to protect the health care benefits of federal employees during government shutdowns (U.S. Representative). With a nurse background, Bernice Johnson also works towards recognizing this profession. She initiated the National Nurse Act of 2019 enabling a Chief Nurse Officer to become the National Nurse for public Health (U.S. Representative). Having a legislator and current or former nurse advocating for the profession and health care system can create improvements, big or small. This person will have some sort of experience in a health care setting, with patients and other nurses, and more appropriately recognize needs related to health care.

Response two: Eddie Bernice Johnson is the first registered nurse elected to Congress and can be counted among the most famous nurses in history because of her outstanding accomplishments in that capacity. As an African-American woman, she has overcome many obstacles in both her nursing and political careers.Ms. Johnson’s nursing career was spent in the psychiatric field. After obtaining her advanced nursing degree, she served as chief psychiatric nurse and psychotherapist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She held that position for 16 years before deciding to enter politics. Ms Johnson is an outstanding example of the value of education. She feels that her nursing education prepared her to make a difference in the world. Her strong feelings about nursing led her to introduce the National Nurse Act of 2011.

Eddie Bernice Johnson introduced HR 3679, The National Nurse Act of 2011 on December 15, 2011. This bill elevates this nurse into a full time leadership position to focus on the critical work needed to address national priorities of health promotion and disease prevention. This bill recognizes the many contributions that nurses have made in public health and disease prevention. It elevates the importance of the Chief Nurse Officer of the United States Public Health Service and states that nurses are in an ideal position to promote social justice and wellness to Americans. The National Nurses Act of 2011 is an important piece of legislation that would establish a focal point for promoting health and disease prevention. Approximately 3.4 million nurses, making the largest sector of healthcare in the United States are benefiting from this.

Response three: In 1981, Daphne D. Campbell graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from SOD Nursing School in Haiti (Ballotpedia, n.d.). Then, 31 years later, in 2010, Representative Campbell ran for and won the Florida House of Representatives’ seat for the 108^th district. Some of the many notable awards earned by Representative Campbell are the “Most Accomplished Black Community Leaders and Entrepreneurs” and “South Florida’s 100 Most Accomplished Caribbean Americans” (The Haitian Roundtable, n.d.).

In 2011, Representative Campbell presented House Bill 1195 to the Florida legislature. House Bill 1195 “supports authorizing Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners to participate in the involuntary commitment of individuals for mental health examination if they show signs of harming themselves or others” (Olin, 2012). Representative Campbell stated her motivation for bringing the bill before the legislature was that she found it “crazy” that multiple professionals with medical or therapy based backgrounds could involuntarily commit a patient threatening to kill themselves or others, but a “fully empowered” advanced registered nurse practitioner could not (Olin, 2012). A very interesting bit of information found in the interview is that “Nurse practitioners could save the state of Florida 339 million dollars if they were allowed to work to their full scope of practice. We ended up removing controlled substance prescribing abilities in order to get the Florida Medical Association’s support for HB1195” (Olin, 2012).
