How the course supported each objective

Being able to correctly prescribe the appropriate medication is key in the management of illness.

The course has supported the learning objectives by helping student to develop a deeper

understanding of the mechanism of actions of major classes of medications with evidence to

explain the pharmacological effects and appropriateness of medication prescription to diverse

population group. The intensive course outlines have enabled students integrate into practice the

ability to educate patients on effects and interactions of medication thereby fostering patient

centered care and optimized treatment. With each case studies and clinical scenario presented in

the course and shadow health digital experience, it has enabled the student to critically assess

patient and make appropriate clinical judgement about medication prescription or other

alternative therapeutic options in the management of disease conditions considering the age,

gender, culture, genetic factors, and ethical concerns. Also, the knowledge gained in the course

has prepared students for future nurse practitioner roles to provide an equitable and unbiased

patient centered care emphasizing on adequate education of individual, families, and community

at large on the importance of medication compliance, possible side effects and drug interactions

to prevent abuse and misuse.

How course material will be applicable professional application

Not only did the course meet the stated objective, but it has also been able to equip students with

additional understanding of how to make an appropriate medication prescriptive decision. With

the expanding roles and scope of practice of a nurse practitioner as explained by the American

Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) (2019), to include counseling and provision of

education and healthcare service to patients, their families, and communities and not limited to

assessment, diagnosing, performing, supervising, and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory

investigations, but also include initiating treatment plans with ordering and prescribing of

medications, the skills and knowledge accrued in this class will undoubtedly increases the ability

of the future advanced practice nurse to make proper implementation of prescriptive authority,

follow guidelines and correctly implement pharmacological therapeutic decisions with

appropriate patient counselling and education , as well as prompt referral or healthcare

collaboration/consultation when indicated. This will not enhance my competence in professional

practice but also improves patient safety and recovery.
