BOOK NEEDED: ANGELAS ASHES

Memoir Essay

Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir Essay Exam

Read this first! Antagonists in literature are necessary to create sufficient conflict to keep the reader interested and move the plot along. Of course people are often antagonists, but so can be settings (time periods, geographical locations) and social systems (cultural, national, economical, educational, political, religious, etc.).

Just about every person and social system McCourt comes into contact with is an antagonist of sorts.

In this essay exam, you will name, explain, and give specific examples/quotations of at least 5 major antagonists from Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir. [Book titles are italicized.] Do not use any outside sources–just use the book itself. You may use discussions posts/replies if you like.

I recommend using a simple 1-2-3 outline to help you brainstorm, organize, and write your essay.

Example Outline:

1. People Antagonists (1 person per paragraph)

A.B.C. (Save the worst/most influential one for last)

2. Social System/Setting Antagonists (1 system per paragraph)

A.B. (Save the worst/most influential one for last)

3. Conclusion (1 short paragraph)Based on all that happens to Frank McCourt, in the end, what do you think is the theme of his book? (In other words, what is McCourt’s message about life to his readers?) State it assertively as you would a thesis statement-the moral to the story.

*You do not need an introductory paragraph; start with body paragraph one. The paper should be 3-5 pages, typed, double-spaced, plus an additional Works Cited page.

**Be sure to give sufficient explanations and examples and quotations, and be sure to state your theme analysis as a clear point/lesson learned about life from the book in the conclusion.

***Proofread/spell check before turning in! USE THE MEMOIR RUBRIC AS A CHECKLIST TO ENSURE YOU HAVE FOLLOWED THE ASSIGNMENT CORRECTLY.
