- In the first interview you will apply the interviewing techniques outlined in Zwiers and Morrisette.
- In the second interview of the module you will apply the interviewing techniques outlined in Chapter 17 of Quas.
What you will be posting is actual practice interviews that includes all the steps – from Sternberg, K. and M. Lamb. et al (Chapter 17 in Quas ed. beginning page 409). One challenge is to adopt the truth and lies ceremony to the different age groups.
This is based on the case scenario discussed in the last module. You may want to review it before proceeding to this section of the assignment. Be sure to start separate discussion threads for each of the two interviews and make clear which one is which.
Your investigative team has determined that, due to the severity of the girl’s beating, she should be placed into protective custody, and that the parents should be interviewed immediately.
The 13-year-old girl will be the subject of the first interview. You are investigating the incident. Decide what questions you will ask her and how you will frame them. Present them here in the online setting. The scenario discussion should demonstrate your ability to apply the steps in the protocol for the week.
Your instructor will be playing the role of the 13-year-old girl. They will respond to your questions in the online setting. Based on the responses and the theory you are learning, is there more information you need, or any clarifications? Feel free to frame and submit more questions.
Your fellow students may add to the discussion thread, if they wish. These insights are very valuable.
The girl’s father will be the subject of the second interview. Mr. Jones is a well-known attorney in your medium sized city who has been active in town government and is known for his vocal criticism of the area schools, social service agencies and those who make use of them. He has run for public office. His brochures and TV ads always highlight his “beautiful wife and family” and their academic and personal accomplishments. When you contact him about the investigation, he insists that he is “too busy” to talk with you. When you insist, he reluctantly agrees to meet you at his office. Decide what questions you will ask him and how you will frame them. Present them here in the online setting.

Your agency has received a call from the principal of XYZ Middle School. The school nurse acting in her role as mandatory reporter has talked to the principal about a probable case of physical abuse. A thirteen-year-old girl was seen walking down the school hall with what seemed to be a paint stain or perhaps blood on the buttocks of her pink sweat suit. The nurse, thinking that perhaps the girl had started her menstrual period or perhaps had sat in red paint, asked the girl to come into her office for a change of clothes. (The nurse keeps clothes in all sizes for just such situations.) The girl began to cry in pain as she was removing her clothes. The nurse asked to look at her buttocks and found that it appeared to have been beaten raw. Blood oozing from the wounds had caused the stain. The nurse gently questioned the girl who told the nurse, “Mom and Dad punished me because I got a “B” on my report card.”
The nurse immediately told the principal who immediately called your office. The girls parents are both well-respected professionals in the community. In fact, one of them is a teacher in the school district.
