Essay 1: Critique
One of the purposes of this course is to help you learn to recognize the features of an effective argument. In an effort to help you achieve that goal, in your first essay for this course you will write a critique of one of the following essays from your textbook:
“The Me Me Me Generation” by Joel Stein (654-660)
“Millennials Come of Age as America’s Most Stressed Generation” by Ariana Huffington (664-666)
Please keep in mind that you are writing a critique, not a response; that means that you should not state whether you agree or disagree with the author’s points, but rather whether you think the author’s argument was effective or ineffective based on criteria that you have developed. Your criteria might include, for example…
…whether the author achieves his or her purpose.
….whether the author’s argument is appropriate for his or her audience.
…whether the author demonstrates biases that affect his or her ability to argue objectively.
…whether the appeal(s) the author uses are appropriate for the argument he or she is making.
…whether the author uses effective/appropriate evidence.
Your essay should be a minimum of two full pages and follow MLA format. You are not required to use other sources besides the argument you are responding to; however, if you do, make sure that you are citing the sources correctly. Your essay should include…
…an introduction that provides a brief summary of the argument you are responding to; an explanation of the criteria you used to critique the essay; and your thesis.
…supporting paragraphs that back up your thesis and that are developed with evidence. Typically, in this type of essay each supporting point might be one of the pieces of criteria you used; evidence will typically consist of examples from the author’s essay that illustrate why he or she did or did not meet your criteria.
…at least one paragraph in which you acknowledge (and refute or concede) a counterargument.
…a conclusion that wraps your argument up and, ideally, leaves your readers with something to think about.
Make sure there is no plagiarism because my unvirsity has a strong system to fond out students cheaters, so i do not but myself in bad situation.
